Convert Between Fractions and Decimals
Fractions and decimals are two ways to represent the same values. Being able to convert between them is essential for math, cooking, construction, and everyday problem-solving.
Understanding the Relationship
A fraction is a division problem:
- 1/2 means 1 ÷ 2 = 0.5
- 3/4 means 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75
- 5/8 means 5 ÷ 8 = 0.625
Numerator: Top number (what you have) Denominator: Bottom number (how many parts in the whole)
Common Fractions to Memorize
Halves:
- 1/2 = 0.5
- 3/2 = 1.5
Quarters:
- 1/4 = 0.25
- 3/4 = 0.75
Thirds:
- 1/3 = 0.333...
- 2/3 = 0.666...
Fifths:
- 1/5 = 0.2
- 2/5 = 0.4
- 3/5 = 0.6
- 4/5 = 0.8
Eighths:
- 1/8 = 0.125
- 3/8 = 0.375
- 5/8 = 0.625
- 7/8 = 0.875
Fraction to Decimal
Method: Divide the numerator by the denominator
Example: Convert 5/8 to decimal
- 5 ÷ 8 = 0.625
Repeating Decimals: Some fractions create repeating decimals
- 1/3 = 0.333... (3 repeats forever)
- 1/6 = 0.1666... (6 repeats)
- 1/7 = 0.142857142857... (pattern repeats)
Decimal to Fraction
Method:
- Count decimal places
- Put digits over power of 10
- Simplify if possible
Example 1: Convert 0.75 to a fraction
- 2 decimal places → 75/100
- Simplify: ÷25 = 3/4
Example 2: Convert 0.125 to a fraction
- 3 decimal places → 125/1000
- Simplify: ÷125 = 1/8
Example 3: Convert 2.4 to a fraction
- 1 decimal place → 24/10
- Simplify: ÷2 = 12/5 or 2 2/5
Practical Applications
Cooking and Baking:
- Recipe calls for 0.75 cups → That's 3/4 cup
- Have 2/3 cup, need decimal for scale → 0.667 cups
Construction and Woodworking:
- Measure 5/16 inch → 0.3125 inches
- Drill bit 0.375 inch → That's 3/8 inch
Finance:
- Interest rate 0.045 → 4.5% or 45/1000 = 9/200
- Stock price 23.625 → 23 and 5/8 dollars
Sports:
- Batting average .333 → 1/3 hits per at-bat
- Free throw percentage 0.875 → 7/8 made
Simplifying Fractions
Find the Greatest Common Factor (GCF):
- 18/24: GCF is 6 → 18÷6 / 24÷6 = 3/4
- 12/16: GCF is 4 → 12÷4 / 16÷4 = 3/4
Common factors to check: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10
Simplified fractions are easier to work with and understand!
Mixed Numbers and Improper Fractions
Mixed Number: Whole number + fraction
- Example: 2 3/4 (two and three-quarters)
Improper Fraction: Numerator larger than denominator
- Example: 11/4 (equals 2 3/4)
Converting:
- 2 3/4 to improper: (2 × 4 + 3)/4 = 11/4
- 11/4 to mixed: 11 ÷ 4 = 2 remainder 3 → 2 3/4
- To decimal: 11/4 = 2.75
Percentages Connection
Decimals, fractions, and percentages are related:
- 0.25 = 1/4 = 25%
- 0.5 = 1/2 = 50%
- 0.75 = 3/4 = 75%
- 1.0 = 1/1 = 100%
Converting to percentage:
- Decimal × 100 = %
- Fraction: divide first, then × 100
Common Measuring Equivalents
Cups to Fractions:
- 1/4 cup = 0.25 = 4 tablespoons
- 1/3 cup = 0.333... ≈ 5.33 tablespoons
- 1/2 cup = 0.5 = 8 tablespoons
- 2/3 cup = 0.667 ≈ 10.67 tablespoons
- 3/4 cup = 0.75 = 12 tablespoons
Inches to Decimal Feet:
- 3 inches = 3/12 = 0.25 feet
- 6 inches = 6/12 = 0.5 feet
- 9 inches = 9/12 = 0.75 feet
Tips for Accuracy
Rounding Decimals:
- 0.666... (2/3) often rounded to 0.67
- 0.333... (1/3) often rounded to 0.33
- Keep more digits for precision calculations
When to Use Which:
